Paul & Margie invited the group up to their suite at the Westin Hotel at South Coast Plaza for appetizers and drinks before dinner this evening at Pinot Provence. They were on the 16th floor.
They put out quite the spread with meats, cheeses, great popcorn. cookies etc. and a tray delivered from room service with some of the best pot stickers I have had. Red, white and bubbly was poured. The view was beautiful and when I got there it was just the beginning of sunset. Had to really watch the eating as we had dinner coming up in an hour.
At the designated time to went back down to the lobby and headed for the restaurant in the hotel. 19 of us tonight. The restaurant was busy. We had great service and I sure hope everyone tipped well.
I ordered an appetizer of wild mushrooms and tempura frog legs. Served on a flat piece of slate. Flavor was wonderful. Six small frog legs which I am sure they are farm raised and they were very tender. I saw a few bowls of french onion soup and it looked really good also.
My dinner choice was the short rib and I will say that is the most tender short rib I have ever had. A great sauce and sitting on a bed of polenta.. Had raspberry & chocolate gelato for dessert. Always room for ice cream.
Margie passed around two boxes of See's chocolates and everyone got a party favor from her. I will say she really outdid herself. to make for a very festive evening
We had a gift exchange of bottles of wine. The restaurant had 2 bottles of a Spanish Tempranillo on the table which was a nice gesture on their part.

Huntington Harbour Boat Parade
Sunday. December 8, 2013
Invited to Donna's for a small gathering to watch the annual boat parade. This year it seems that the amount of boast decorated was much smaller than last year. Weather was cold but not windy like last night. She had the fire pit going and the patio heaters turned up. Donna made a great pot of chili and it really hit the spot on this cold night.
All the houses in the harbour are decorated and it was quite festive. Apparently the association really gets on people who do not decorate, Some of the houses were decked out heavy the lights and decorations. Must be a lot of work.. Donna's place is on a corner of the main channel so you get to see the boats 4 times as they make their circuit of the harbour.
Can't list the wines that were brought - I brought a 2009 Clos Pepe Sparkling Pinot Noir. The rest of the wines I wouldn't cook with. Granted this was not the wine crowd but you would think that if you were invited for dinner that you could pop for more that $5 for a bottle. And these are all people that have lot more money than I do.

Dim Sum at Seafood Palace
Saturday, December 7, 2013
Henry called at the last minute and wanted to get together for Dim Sum. So Terry & I joined him. The Seafood Palace is much busier on weekends for Dim Sum than during the week. Also the dishes cost $2.38 each instead of $2.00. No matter it is still a huge bargain compared to other food places.
Started out with Lotus Leaf wrapped rice ball. Rice, mushrooms, Chinese sausage. Had a sweet taste to the rice. You do not eat the lotus leaf. It is strictly a wrap.
Next was the shrimp in the soft noodle wrap we had last time. Still good, still slippery and hard to eat. Also had the shrimp rolled in seaweed again.
New dish - scallop dumplings, very good and also had a repeat on the ribs, and sweet & sour soup.
Topped it off the beef with snow peas and carrots.
7 dishes for 3 people and the bill with tax & tip came to $11 each.
Wines were all excellent. 2002 & 2006 McKeon Phillips BPR Cabernet and I brought a 2004 Bouchard Pere Fils Gervey Chambertain. At its peak and I don't think it would improve any more.
This was nice break from all the hustle of trying to get things ready for the holidays.

Dim Sum
Friday, November 29, 2013
The boys and I met for Dim Sum lunch today at the Seafood Palace. This was the first time I could join them for lunch as I still work full time and they are all retired so one day is just like another to them. Since it was Thanksgiving week I had 4 days off which is almost like a vacation.
After I was there for a few minutes I asked Henry where CJ was. The look on Henry's face was priceless. He had forgotten to call CJ and let him know we were doing lunch that day. It was funny. As it was CJ had another commitment.
We started out with a shrimp wrapped in a wonton type noodle/wrapper. It was sitting in a sauce which made it very slippery. It was hard to eat with a fork much less chopsticks. Even Henry who is Chinese was having problems. Flavor was good.
Next we were served a hot/sour soup. We have had this particular soup with dinner before and it is aways a hit with us.
Scallops with Snow Peas and carrots. Scallops seemed to be extra tender for some reason.
Then some little rolls about 4 inches long appeared - a mixture of ground shrimp, ground pork and ground fish rolled in Seaweed and fried. Excellent flavor.
Steamed spare ribs with black beans. Again very good flavor.
Steamed Pork ball with fish. Very tender.
White fish, chefs style with jalapenos and onions. Another good and flavorful dish
BBQ pork buns - a staple at Dim Sum's.
Mongolian Beef with Chinese Broccoli
Beef Tendon in a sauce - I always like beef tendon - if cooked properly it is very tender and depending on the sauce it should have a lot of flavor which this dish did.
Squid with Chinese Broccoli - good but I do like the salt & pepper calamari better
Steamed Tripe was our last dish. Very tender. Tripe has really no flavor of its own. Just takes on the flavor of what it is cooked in.
The nice thing about Dim Sums' is the array of dishes you can eat. All portions are small and when you have 5 people is a good way to try a wide variety of specialties of the restaurant. So 12 dishes for 5 people today.
We nailed in in the wine department today. The Christmas Spirit is starting to get to everyone. Even the Seafood Palace had their decorations up.

Champange Dinner at Delius
Friday, November 22, 2013
This is an annual event with Delius, They announce it as a "Champagne" dinner but in reality it is mostly and sometimes all sparkling wines. But it is always interesting and the wines are always good. It is never a sold out dinner. I think most people cannot understand how a sparkling wine can go with food dishes. They should get out of their narrow boxes once in awhile.
Kevin Butler from the Henry Wine Group was our rep. Sat with him and his wife, Melanie again. I got there a few minutes early and Matt, the sommelier gave me a glass of sparkling while I waited.
First Course: Winter Squash Ravioli, Butter Poached Lobster, Fresh Peas and Pea Tendrils. Wine was a Vinum Sparkling Chenin Blanc, California. I thought this was the best wine of the day. Just released and not in the stores yet. Dry but a lot of flavor going on . The Ravioli was tender and the flavor excellent.
Second Course: Fig & Pomegranate Watercress Salad, Stilton Cheese, Pistachio-Honey Vinaigrette. Best pairing of the meal with a Malvira "Birbet:, from Italy. I was really surprised at the pairing.
Third Course: Roasted Octopus, Sunchoke, Yellow Wax Bean Potato Salad, Red Current Mustard Aioli. Octopus was very tender but the mustard aioli was to die for. Wine was a 2010 Mont-Ferrant Reserved Brut Cava, Spain. My least liked wine. Good but just not for me.
Fourth Course: Roasted Squab, Liver and Persimmon Stuffing, Swiss Chard & Cipollini Onion. I was getting stuffed by now so I did not finish my plate. The liver & persimmon stuffing was quite interesting and it and the squab paired exceptionally well with the 2009 Llopart Rose Brut Cava, Spain. First sparkling I have had made from Mouvedre grape. I did like this wine.
Dessert was a Raspberry Mousse Cake. So good, very delicate and light. Good ending for this rich meal

La Parolaccia Osteria Italiana
Wednesday, November 20, 2013
We were a table of six tonight and then Marc & Edie came in and were seating at a small table adjacent to ours. Sold out event with a long waiting list. $36 for 6 course and a liter of chianti wine for every two people. A huge bargain. Yes, the wine was not fantastic but it was a very drinkable "dago red". And you were allowed to take home the bottles even if they still had wine in them. Some people wanted them because they were the old time chianti" bottles with the straw wrapped around them
We stared out with an appetizer of "Schiacciata al Rosmarino", flat pizza bread with rosemary and garlic, Could be addicting.
Soup wasa "Pappa al Pomodoro" - a thick, creamy tomato and potato soup with a slice of toasted Tuscan bread in the bottom
First course was "Pappardelle al Cinghiale" wide ribbon pasta, wild boar meat, onions, garlic, tomato sauce and parmesan cheese.
You had your choice on the main course -either fish or pork chop. 3 of us had the pork and 3 had the fish.
I chose the pork chop. Mine was large and very tender. Cindy's was small and tough. Luck of the draw. Served with a wine reduction, garlic and roasted potatoes.
Dessert was really good "Torta Dellla Nonna". A lemon "cake" with ice cream A nice light touch to end the meal.
Stafano is always very accommodating. Always asks everyone if they have any dietary problems or need to change an item on the menu. It has been awhile since I have been to La Parolaccio. Will have to remember to go more frequently. Food is always good. Not high end but good Italian cooking. Good size portions and priced reasonably. Good wine list, priced right.

Novembers Wine Activity and Dinner at J Trani's
Saturday, November 16, 2013
Stopped at Off The Vine Wine store in San Pedro before heading for dinner. Tasted 6 wines and had a small appetizer plate to share. Wines were OK but it is just their regular wine tasting. Nothing special.
Headed for J Trani's a few blocks away. Ten of us tonight for dinner. I ordered the Wagu steak. I did not really notice that my dinner was taking longer than most because all the dinners came out of the kitchen sporadically. But since it took longer they ending up comping me my meal. That was a class act. The steak was perfect. A wide variety of dinners were ordered, From pasta to fish to duck. Everyone had good things to say about their meals. Portions were very large. Even the dinner salad was a meal in itself.
Interesting thing about tonight's wines. Someone brought a 2008 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir. When it was opened and set on the table a few people said "Oh Sea Smoke" like they were in awe. I had brought a 2008 Huber Pinot Noir. Tasted these two Pinots, both from the Sta. Rita Hills and I would take the Huber any day over the Sea Smoke. Much better wine but it does not have the "cult" following that Sea Smoke has. Several people at the table agreed with me. And Huber is half the price.
2008 Huber Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
2009 Ribbon Ridge, Framenta Cellar, Oregon, Pinot Noir
2010 L'Adventure Optimus (this should have been great - a little disappointed but I don't think it should have been opened for at least 4 to 5 years)
2011 Clos Pepe Sta. Rita Hills, Homage to Chablis, Chardonnay
Espimosa Ca Sparkling wine, Danza Del Sol Winery, Lodi
2005 La Velona Branello di Montalcino, Italy
2008 Sea Smoke, Southing, Sta Rita Hills, Pinot Nir
Veuve Cliquot Champagne, Brut
2011 BV Rutherford
2008 Fontezoppa "Marine" Rache, Sangiovese, Italy
2009 Stolpman, Ballard Canyon, Sangiovese
Oyster and White Wine Tasting
Friday, November 8, 2013
Wine Country is Signal Hill was hosting an oyster and wine event tonight. 12 oysters and 12 wines for $45. Oysters were really good. Unfortunately they did not list the names on the wine list. The majority of the wines were really great, A dry Riesling was outstanding with the oysters. Sold out venue with a waiting list. I am sure they will do this event again.

Vacation Time
Week of November 1 to 7 - headed up to Avila Beach with a stop at the Huber Vineyards along the way. On Saturday the San Luis Obispo Vintners Association hosted the wine fest at the golf course next to the San Luis Bay Inn which I was staying. Tasted a lot of new releases and had some really good food. Talked with Mike Sinor who has his own label Sinor-LaValle and is the wine maker at Ancient Peaks. Had planned of going by the facility on Sunday to pick up wines but is was going to be locked down because they are still picking grapes.
Sunday headed over to Paso Robles (the only day I went) and went out to the Pleasant Valley area.
First stop was Graveyard Winery. I had heard nice things about this place. The staff was very friendly, the view outstanding. The wines are good but not great. But a good price point for what they are. The staff recommended two other places to stop. So I headed down the road to J & J. A group of their wine club members were there and they were a really fun group. The wines were ok but not ones I would buy.
Next stop was LaVigne. Best wines of the day. Did purchase a few bottles here.
Spent the week at a very relaxing pace. Did not overdo any tasting or eating. Tuesday I spent the day in Pismo Beach. Went to the Monarch Butterfly sanctuary for a few hours. Then stopped at Taste of The Valley in Pismo to do some tasting. Met a couple from The San Diego area. He used to go to Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach when I was racing. We had a lot to talk about. He remembered the pontoon bridge in Long Beach along with Airplane Hill. People don't believe me when I tell them about the bridge
On Wednesday went into Los Olivos and picked up at Stolpman, hit the Christmas store in Solvang and went over to Lompoc to pickup at Loring,
Headed back home n Thursday to a big problem in my kitchen remodel. One cabinet came in the wrong size and has to be reordered. This delays everything by two weeks. I will be lucky to have my kitchen in some stage of working order by Thanksgiving. Lesson to be learned. Micro manage everything yourself.

Halloween at Phil Trani's
Thursday, October 31, 2013
Festival seating was the norm for tonight's dinner at Phil Trani's in Long Beach. The old Trani's restaurant in San Pedro was a hangout for the old LA Rams football team along with many other sports teams. The restaurant in Long Beach still has a large collection of sports memorabilia in the bar / lounge area. Most of the items are signed by the people that they at one time belonged to.
Some people tonight came in costume. I wasn't a costume person when I was a kid and still don't get into it. But they were some interesting people tonight.
The wine being poured tonight is from the Michael David Winery in Lodi. These are middle of the road wines. Some quite good. I did get a new wine opener to add to my collection.
We started out with a Pumpkin Ravioli paired with a 2011 Chardonnay. Oaky wine but did pair decent with the ravioli. Flavor of the ravioli was good but the dough was not as tender as it could have been.
Blackened Seared Ahi was next. This could have been cooked a bit shorter. It was too done for my particular tastes. Had good flavor. Wine was a 2011 Ancient Vines Cinsault. I found this wine to be the best of the evening.
Two entrees were served. A Peppered Flat Iron Steak with Wasbi Mashed Potatoes and a Stuffed Pork with Feta Cheese and Carmelized Onions. Steak was good and cooked correctly. The wasbi was overkill. The stuffed pork had good flavor. Paired with a 2011 Freakshow Caberent Sauvignon.
Dessert was a Chocolate Raspberry Tart paired with a Lust Zin. I found the tart dough was too much on the heavy side. But the flavor of the chocolate. raspberry combination was good.
In spite of a few hiccups in the dinner at $60 inclusive it was hard to beat and I gor a wine opener. Pours were generous and numerous, Food was good portions. The company at the table was great and a good time was had by all.

October Wino's
Sunday, October 20, 2013
Lots of wine, food and prizes was the format for today's "Gathering of The Flock", The theme was White Wines From The Burgundy Region and Red Wines From The Bordeaux Region. Several 1st Cru's and Grand Cru's made an appearance. A few real standouts, but for the most part all were very good wines. We had to vote on our most liked white and red wine which became a hassle, You would think you had it nailed then tasted another wine and changed your mind. By time you got to the end of 23 wines it was hard to remember. But we had two very good winners. A 2011 Mawn Milly Lamcutine Recoete Clos du Fous for the Burgundy region and a 2008 Chateau Valade St. Emilion Grand Cru from the Bordeaux region were proclaimed the mist liked wines.

Prime Cut
Saturday, October 12, 2013
13 of us gathered tonight in the cellar room at Prime Cut. Near the Honda Center. We have been here before and the food was always good. No corkage for us tonight.
The specialize in prime steaks and prime rib. I ordered the Ribeye steak. Great flavor but quite a bit of grizzle at one end. Several people indicated the same with their steaks. For the price this not acceptable. I had the creamed spinach for my side and it was very good.
Conversation was lively at my end of the table. But when you have a long table with so many people you always have "Two Tables". Each end becomes separate. The "other" end seemed to be having a good time but we obviously were noisier.
Wines were varied and good. A couple were exceptional to the rest. A couple of people didn't think it was important to list the year of their wines when the notepad was passed around.
2007 Chateau Maegene, Paso Robles, Cabernet Franc
???? Verante, Chile, Chardonnay - this person also brought a red from Walla Walla but did not write it down

2008 Williams Selyem, Sonoma Coast, Pinot Noir
The Williams Selyem, McKeon Phillips and the Orin Swift I think were the really good wines of the ones that I tasted. I did not taste them all

Pouzzoli Winery
Saturday, October 12, 2013
Several of us met at the Pouzzoli tasting room in Tustin. Sat in the barrel room. Wines were nice. Did not buy and because I am trying to reduce the size of my cellar by a lot and the only way to do that is drink, not buy.
A little disappointed in the information that was given to us, which is to say was not enough. The son is a soft spoken person, hard to hear unless you are right next to him.
A nice appetizer spread was put out so that was a big plus,
They plan on opening a tasting room in Paso Robles at their winery and continue to keep the one in Tustin.

Gladstones at Shoreline
Met at Gladstones in Shoreline Village. 5 of us for dinner. We sat outside on the patio area. The Santa Ana winds were blowing today so the evening by the water was really nice. Did not bring any wine as the people I was dining with are not "winos" A house brand is always OK for them.
Had the Lobster Sushi roll for dinner. It was very large and filling. Also very good. A couple of people had Fish and Chips along with New England style Clam Chowder. No one had a complaint. Prices weren't too out of line. It is a "tourist" area.
Parking hits you hard. Either valet or self park. Self park for the evening was $8 about the same for valet. But the walk from the self park is nice, past all the boats. And tonight was quite pleasant. Bad weather I would opt for the valet.

Buon Gusto

Went back to Buon Gusto in Huntington Beach tonight to refresh myself in order to write a small article in out community newsletter. Not formal, unpretentious and a little noisy. The restaurant is clean and service is fast. Get there early because it gets packed with people in the early evening. Portions are huge and take home is the norm.
Two of us had the house salad which was a meal in its self. Crisp lettuce, loaded with marinated vegetables and freshly grated cheese. Bread comes with every meal. I ordered the Veal Marsala. Two large slices of veal on a bed of Rigatoni, Loaded with mushrooms and a good sauce. Other dishes order were the pasta with meat sauce and Gnocchi with marinara sauce. Sauces are made fresh in house.
Since the other two people really did not drink wine I did not bring any tonight. No corkage which is good. Had a glass of the house Chianti which is made by San Antonio Winery in Los Angeles, At $3 a glass is was decent "Diego Red".

Quick Dinner at Golden Star
Tuesday, October 1, 2013
The boys and I met for dinner tonight. Unfortunately, Henry who was very pale when he walked in, continued to get paler and got so sick that we had to drive him home. So dinner was cut very short.
We did order some dishes we have not had for quite awhile. Everything was good but under the circumstances we did not linger. Several of the dishes were boxed up to take home.
We started out with a Pork and Vegetable soup which had great flavor. Then on to Beef & Chinese Broccoli, BBQ ribs which ha a sweet maple taste to them, Pea Shoots, Clams and Fried Bass.
Our wines which everyone took home because the bottles were hardly touched were: 2008 Clos Pepe VS Pinot Noir, excellent. 2008 & 2003 McKeon Phillips BPR Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 Mt Brave Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, 2008 AP Vin, Rancho Ontiveras Pinot Noir, again excellent. 2007 P2 Cargassachi Pinot Noir.
A good line up of wines. And food. There will always be a next time. Henry was feeling much better the next day when I talked with him and thankfully is was not the flu.

Ceppos
Friday, September 27, 2013
Raymond's Bistro has been bought out and replaced with Ceppos. Margie and I decided to have girls night out and try the new owners. I will say I was very disappointed and think perhaps these new people will not make it unless they do some changes to their menu. They changed the menu completely from Raymond's. Heavy on the pasta dishes with only 4 alternatives.
Pasta is not bad but they were using commercially made pasta. A small place like this that wants to be known for pasta should make their own. Also have fresh grated parmesan. I had the Seafood Pescatore and the seafood was all fresh. A big plus. But the pasta was nothing special and the sauce was just ok. Margie had the Chicken Alfredo and was disappointed in the sauce, too much butter
Our salads were nice with fresh, crisp lettuce. No problems with those. Service was good. But the place was empty. In the two hours we were there only 2 other parties came in . Plus they have a corkage fee of $12. Their wine list is mediocre, low end wines. Only a red & white by the glass. These are their house wines which I have no idea what label it is. All the other wines are by the bottle only.
I would go back in about a month to see if there are any changes, but if no changes I would cross them off by list.

The Hobbit
Wednesday, September 25, 2013
Tonight 7 of us went to the Hobbit in the city of Orange for dinner. This place has been around for a long time. A converted old two story house with prixe fixe dinning. Today was one of the few days that they have no corkage. Normally it is $25 for the first bottle and $35 for the second with a 2 bottle maximum at the table. The Hobbit has a extensive wine cellars with high prices to match.
I rode with CJ and we made it from my house to the restaurant in 25 minutes by taking the carpool lane. We passed at least 3 miles of stopped cars on the freeway. This was a 6:00 pm in work traffic.
Upon arrival they took our wines to open and chill while we went upstairs to the bar / lounge area. The bedrooms have been converted for this. I will say that my cocktail was made very well. I ordered a Sidecar and CJ had a single malt scotch The rest of our party showed up and we saw an acquaintance from the Wine Country who unfortunately did not know it was no corkage night,
At 7:00 we were ushered downstairs into the wine cellar for champagne and appetizers. Had to be careful not to over indulge on the goodies. They were all excellent. People were picking out their wines for dinner. I really have a hard time paying $110 for a bottle of wine that I have in my cellar that cost me $48. Maybe I am getting "frugal" in my old age.
After 30 minutes or so we were ushered back to the dining areas. We had a table in front of the fireplace with all our wines lined up on the mantle. Service was impeccable. Terry was asked what wine he wanted poured with each course. We started out with the Robert Moncuit Champagne I brought and the Roar Chadonnay.
First course was a Cornmeal Encrusted Smoked Catfish with sauteed Mustard Greens & Creole Sauce. This was very good but personally I like the catfish at Nayada better.
Second course was a Roasted Duck Leg w/Braised Leek Risotto & Maderia Reduction. Excellent dish. Wines paired with this dish was a 07 Testarossa Gray's Vineyard Pinot Noir which I think was the wine of the night and 07 Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon. A 87 Cedon Segur was opened but the bottle was corked.
Next came a Watermelon & Baby Mache with Peach Balsamic Vinaigrette. Helped clean the palate
We had a short intermission where we went outside for approximately 15 minutes with any glass of wine we had on the table. When we returned we sat down to a dish of sorbet and then the main course arrive.
Cote de Boeuf with fresh horseradish. Excellent cut of meat, cooked perfectly, A 2003 Moncoenqut St Emilion Grand Cru and a 1997 Domaine Lo Piphon, Clos Ves Bonnes Bunche
Dessert was outstanding. A Double Chocolate Lava Cake with Sea Salt & Bourbon Caramel & fresh berries. A Chateau de Leon, St. Lesdad, Loire, Chenin Blanc was paired with the dish. Both are excellent but I am not a sweet on sweet person. My take is serve a dessert wine with a cheese plate.
As for the spelling of the wines, I had a hard time writing with the pen I had, It kept skipping so the spelling may be a little off. But I think you can get the picture that we had had some excellent wines tonight.
Had a tour of the kitchen. The owner/chef is very accommodating. One of our party did not eat seafood so they had a substitute dish for her. Like I indicated before service was impeccable. Delius's service is excellent but the Hobbit was over the top. My only complaint is the stairs. I take them one at a time and go down sideways. Going up is no problem but down is a killer on my knees.
Looking forward to the next time the Hobbit does no corkage. I noticed on the tables with 2 & 3 people they only had one bottle. Deep cellar, priced to high. But excellent food and service.

September Wino's
Sunday, September 22, 2013
Our monthly get together's theme was Latitude 38 - North being Napa Chardonnays and South being New Zealand Pinot Noirs. All the wines were good today but none stood out as great or memorable. 2 of the wines were duplicates and 1 wine was a triplicate. I brought a Mountford Estate Pinot that was recommended by Southern Hemisphere Wines. It was ok but I expected more from what I was told about the wine.
Weather was good - never know in September what it will be . We lucked out with perfect weather for a wine tasting outdoors.
The appetizers that were brought today made a big hit. For some reason they all seemed to be exceptionally good. I made a new recipe that called for cream cheese, mayo, shredded cheese, ortega & jalapeno peppers. Baked in the oven and the flavors were really good. That one will show up again. Fast & easy with good flavor.

Back To The Himalayan
Tuesday, September 17, 2013
I have decided that six is the ideal number for The Himalayan Grille. 4 would be ok but 6 works perfect for the food dishes and the size of the table. Autumn is just around the corner as I had to put a jacket on tonight. The Himalayan is just two blocks off the beach and we saw no sun today because of the marine layer.
We started out with Samosa's and Momo's. Added Lamb Tibetan, Lamb Tiki, Shrimp Vendahloo, Lamb Saag and two vegetable dishes, Alli Gobi and Vegetables Korma. Along with garlic Naan and rice to round out the meal. As usual all the food was good and left to take home except rice.
CJ opened a bottle of Hansel wine and it was corked. I opened a bottle of Lucia at dinner last Saturday and it was corked. I will be so glad when everyone goes to screw caps.
Wines on the table were a NV Torley Gala Sec, Sec-Szaraz sparking from Hungary. Actually we were all pleasantly surprised that it was more than a decent wine. For a $9 price tag I was happy - so thank you Steve & Kathy for the giving me a bottle of it and letting me know how good it was in spite of the inexpensive cost.
2007 Sea Smoke Botella
2010 Joseph Blair, Ghetto White, don't know the blend but it tasted like there might be some white Rhone grape in it.. David & Judy did not know the blend but they picked it up Labor Day weekend at the Lompoc Wine Ghetto.
2008 Williams Selyem, Russian River, Pinot Noir
2010 Lynmar, Russian River, Chardonnay
2010 Painted Wolf Pinotage
2009 LeCuvier Zinfandel

Olive Oil Tasting and Dinner at Preveza
Saturday, August 14, 2013
A new place has opened in Los Alamitos. Antcia. They sell Olive Oils, Balsamic Vinegars and Spices. We had a class on tasting the products which was quite interesting and informative. I did learn quite a few new things about oils and vinegars.
I bought a Honey-Ginger Balsamic, Dark Chocolate Balsamic and a Garlic Olive Oil. It was temping to buy more but the store is close and easy for me to go back to. They have a recipe and pairing paper that gives you much needed information.
This a definite return place. Prices are reasonable for the quality
Afterwards we headed down one block and across the street to have dinner at Preveza. It has been over year since I ate here. I probably will not go back. The quality of the food has declined quite a bit. I had the "Aegean Sea" which is pasta with white wine sauce and clams, mussells and shrimp. \The shrimp were either frozen or old. They used to put scallops and white fish in the dish. I also noticed that restaurant was not that busy on a Saturday night. It used to be packed with people waiting outside.
There were 12 of us and they had a very long rectangular table set up for about 20. If they would have taken the smaller table at the end and moved it elsewhere then the seating would have worked better. As it was because it was so tight to get in and out people who came in late were on the other side way at the end.
So I think that whatever was happening with the universe Wednesday was till in force tonight. A bottle of opened wine got knocked over, a wine glass with wine in it, got broken. I lost my Nuance wine pourer and a very good ink pen. I also had a bad bout of acid reflux and had to dash to the restroom. That has not happened in awhile.
I brought a 2007 Lucia, Santa Lucia Highlands, Pinot Noit - was disappointed as it was corked. So into the vinegar jar it goes to make wine vinegar for next year.
Other wines brought:
2011 Tobin James, James Gang Reserve, Chardonnay
32003 Tobin James, Silver Reserve Syrah
2011 Pecchenino ,San Lugi Dogliani red Wine
2011 Hart, Huis Vineyard, Temecula, Sangiovese
2011 Meiomi, Pinot Noir
2011 Lynmar, Laguna Ridge Pinot Noir
2012 Cakebread Cellars, Savignon Blanc
2011 Two Hands Gnarly Dudes, Barossa Valley, Shiraz
NV Private Cuvee, Danza del Sol Winery Espumosa , Lodi Sparkling
2011 Weingut Geil, Gerwurztraminer, Kabimett
200 Chateau St Jean, Cing Cepages
2010 Rombauer, Zinfandel
So a very good day for Margie's Fun Wine Activity for August in spite of a few mishaps. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the Olive Oil place because they bought a lot of product

Seafood Palace
Wednesday, August 11, 2013
The boys and I met tonight at the Seafood Palace. For some reason things seemed awkward tonight, Took awhile for the conversation to get going. Even after a few sips of wine it was not our jovial group. Maybe something with the moon, sun or whatever. I know traffic was horrendous this evening. Maybe when the freeway construction is over things will improve.
We started out with the Salt & Pepper Calamari. Just like last time it was not the same as before. Not much seasoning. Different cook maybe.
Sizzling Rice with Shrimp showed up. John really liked the puffed up rice. Our old standard Beef with Chinese Broccoli was brought to the table. Always good.
Henry ordered a new dish for us. Roasted Chicken Cantonese Style with Shrimp Chips. Really moist chicken with a very crispy skin. It was very good and I probably would have appreciated it more if I didn't eat so much chicken during the week. I very rarely order a chicken dish when I dine out,
A tureen of the Sweet/Sour soup was set down and ladled up. This soup is always full of many flavors and has always been consistently good.
By this time I am full but a huge platter of Peking Duck arrives. I can eat one piece but that is it. I did take the leftovers home.
All in all a good dinner but since it was the "Seafood" Palace I was disappointed that more seafood was not ordered. I prefer the duck at the Golden Star so that dish could have been left off the dinner and something else ordered and I would have been happier.
Dessert was a simple tray of sliced oranges and fortune cookies.
Wines brought were:
2009 Terre Valentine, Spring Mtn District, Cabernet Sauvignon
2008 McKeon Phillips Leonardo
2006 McKeon Phillips BPR Cabernet Sauvignon
2011 Tourine Val de Loire, Rose of Pinot Noir
2009 Clos Pepe Chardonnay
2006 Kosta Browne Russian River Pinot Noir
The Leonardo and the Kosta Brown were first two bottles emptied. By the end of the evening only a small amount of the Rose & Chardonnay were left.
Next month back to the Golden Star.

The Leonardo and the Kosta Brown were first two bottles emptied. By the end of the evening only a small amount of the Rose & Chardonnay were left.
Next month back to the Golden Star.

August Wino's Gathering
Saturday, August 24, 2013
Our monthly wino's gathering theme was Zinfandels, Primotivo's. Champagnes, Sparkings & Rose's. Weather cooperated and the day was not to hot. Nothing like high alcohol wines and heat. Started at 3:00 and the host is still setting up at 3:30. I have never been able to understand this concept. I tasted about 5 of the Zinfandels and they were good. The one Rose that was brought I was not a fan of but all the sparklings were good. Appetizers were very good. I filled up on them as the host is known for over cooking the meat until it is so dry I can't eat it. So what ever was on the table for the main course I bypassed on. Good company and enjoyed myself. But left at a reasonable hour as I have had quite the week.
German Wines and Dinner at Delius
Friday, August 24, 2013 - Rudi Weist Imports was rep'd by Allie who brought her daughter along. Allie's daughter is studying agriculture at SLO University and wants to be a winemaker She has already interned at a winery in Germany and for Saxum in Paso Robles. Nice to have a mother with connections. So it was the three of us a the table. Sold out dinner. As usual the food was great. I found no fault with any of the dishes or wine pairings. The red wine that was served with the lamb was a Caberent / Dornfelder blend. Drinking it on its own would not be my thing but it blossomed with the food.
We started out with a glass of 2011 von Buhl Riesling Sekt Brut. Nice pours when you sit with the rep.
First course was a Squash and Carmelized Onion Ravioli, house made Ricotta stuffed Squash Blossom over a Corn Pudding. My favorite of the evening. wine was a 2011 Schloss Lieser Estate Riesling, Medium dry. Absolutely perfect pairing.
Next was Braised Pork Cheek with Trio of Baled Farm Apples, Celery and Fennel. The pork cheek melted in your mouth. Paired with a 2009 Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtropchen Riesling Kabinett.
Third Course: Fried Oysters, Green Curry Aioli - my second favorite dish. Oysters were fried perfectly and soft and succulent. Wine was a 2011 Monchhof Mosel Slate Riesling Spatlese. Again a perfect pairing.
Main Course served was a Leg of Lamb Stuffed With Farm Root Vegetables and Chimichurri. Served with a 2009 Becker Red Wine Cuvee "Guillaume"
Dessert was a Rumtopf - traditional rum pot dessert. Excellent.

Clos Pepe Open House and Barrel Sampling
Sunday, August 18, 2013 - Arrived at the Clos Pepe Vineyards for their annual open house and to pick up wines I ordered last year and place my new order for pickup in 2014. They put out their grand cheese spread. All cheeses from the Beverly Hills Cheese Company. Tasted all the new releases and some Library wines. Again numerous people that I knew were in attendance.
Loaded my wines and headed across Hwy 246 to Huber Vineyards to visit with Norman & Traudl. Found out they will be leasing their vineyards to Pali Wines and slowly start retiring. They are a great couple but unfortunately none of their children or grand children are interested in the wine business. Spent some time with them and Norman showed be a beautiful hand carved Black Forest wood clock in the house along with a very old desk he is refinishing. Beautiful work. Norman was brought over to restore all the woodwork on the Queen Mary when it was brought into Long Beach. They are selling the few remaining cases of 2009 Huber Pinot Noir for $210 a case. Bought one and probably should have brought 2 cases.
Left the Huber's and continued to Buellton to attend Loring/Cragasacchi open house at their new tasting room next to the Hitching Post restaurant. They had a Taco stand for the day and some of the best taco's I have had in awhile, The lady was hand making the tortillas, patting them in her hand and they were perfect rounds. Sat down and had 3 tacos and a Coca Cola in a GLASS bottle. They do taste different between glass and cans.
Picked yo my wine I had ordered earlier in the year and headed back to Lompoc. Have to drive back on Monday morning.

2013 Wine & Fire Grand Tasting
After checking into my hotel, I left to attend the Grand Tasting at the La Purisima Mission. 40 wineries and 10 restaurants. Saw numerous people I knew from LA & Orange county. Wino's show up everywhere. I only tasted approximately 15 wineries. This is wine overload and you are better off picking and choosing. I try to taste new wineries that I am not familiar with. Kita Wines was one of them, This is an endeavor by the Chumash Indians and I found their wines quite pleasing. Its really hard to find a bad wine in this area. After wandering for several hours and enjoying the perfect weather that nature has given me this weekend. I headed by to my room. After all I have a big day tomorrow.
2013 Wine & Fire Symposium
Saturday, August 17 left OC about 6:10 and with a great drive, no traffic but lots of fog arrived in Buellton about 8:50. Gassed the car up - only took 6 gallons to get here and headed to Ellen's for breakfast. Ellen's was packed so decided to try Coco's . It has been closed down, I need to be at Hillard Bruce Winery by 10:00 for a seminar on "The Treasures of The Sta. Rita Hills", so I hit Carl's Jr for a breakfast sandwich. Sure missed the biscuits and gravy at Ellen's. I was so looking forward to it. Only time I order it because the dish is really not very good for the body. But it sure does taste good as does most things you shouldn't eat.
Headed down 246 towards Lompoc and got to Hillard Bruce about 9:50. Tables for lunch were set up on the circular driveway and the tent covered the huge patio area in front of the house (which is huge also). After a few minutes of cahos (which happens most times with volunteers) we were allowed to go in a be seated. Sat in the front row facing the panelist's first seminar was on Chardonnay. Josh Raynolds of Stephan Tanzer's International Wine Cellar was the moderator. Steve Clifton talked about Sweeney Canyon Vineyard, Ken Brown had Rita's Crown Vineyard, Rancho El Jabli was represented by Richard Sanford. These three were talking about what the call the "Santa Rosa" corridor of the Sta. Rita Hills. Next we had the Sta Rita Hwy 246 corridor represented by John Hillard of Hillard Bruce Vineyard, Leslie Mead Renauld of Foley Winery and Antonio Moretti of Moretti Wines. We tasted the 2010 Sweeney Canyon Chardonnay, 2011 Rita's Crown Chardonnay, 2011 Alma Rosa, El Jabali Chardonnay, 2010 Hillard Bruce Chardonnay, 2011 T Anchor Chardonnay and the 2011 3-D Vineyard Chardonnay,
Took a small break and listen to Wes Hagen give a talk about the soil in the region and how it affects the great wine that is made in the Sta. Rita Hills. Then came back in the start the Pinot Noir segment of the seminar. The Santa Rosa Corridor was represented by Brandon Sparks-Gilles of Dragonette talking about the Cargasacchi Vineyard, Kris Curran of D'Alfonso Curran speaking about the Rancho LaVina Vneyards, and Norm Yost of Flying Goat representing Rio Vista Vineyards, The Sta. Rita 246 Corridor had Kimberly Smith of La Montagne spoke about the Kessler-Hawk Vineyard, Clos Pepe Vineyard was represented by Adam Lee of Siduri and Bill Wathen of Foxen was last with the Sabastiano Vineyard.
The seminars were informative and very casual. Question and answer time followed each seminar. I could have stayed a few more hours just listening to the panelists. We then went outside to have lunch catered by the Hitching Post Restaurant. I grabbed a seat with an umbrella over the table. Ended up sitting with Nikki of Liquid Farms, Adam Lee of Siduri and Wes Hagen of Clos Pepe. Not bad company top share lunch with. The wines poured freely and I had to really watch my consumption. After all we have the big tasting tonight

Williams Selyem Part 2
Saturday. August 3, 2013
This is the second part of a Williams Selyem wine tasting. Part 1 last year which was a vertical of the wines left 2 magnums not opened. So "tonight is the night because I have been saving all my wines for you". This tasting was in a private home and limited to a total of 12 people. A different mix from last year. 5 of us from last year and 7 new faces at the table. Dining tonight was "al fresco". Weather was good and the area enclosed so the ocean breeze did not bother you. I went over a few hours early to help with the food prep and set up.
We started out with an appetizer plate that consisted of 3 cheese, Asiago, Comte & Rubusto, fresh mango, Kettle Honey Dijon chips, Puff pastry filled with Brie, walnuts and honey and seared Wasabi encrusted Ahi with citrus soy sauce. The wine was a 2008 Drake Estate Vineyard, Blanc de Blanc (100% Pinot). Only sold at the winery to allocation members only. Williams Seylem is a closed winery and open by appointment to members only.
Second course was a Scallop Crudo and Thai Lime Shrimp. Paired with a 2011 Limestone Ridge, Vista Verde Vineyard Chenin Blanc.
Entree plate was Grilled Wild Salmon, Lamb Stew, Truffle infused Mashed Potatoes with Rosemary speared Red Potato, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Green Beans & Peas in a Romanesco garlic sauce, Diced Carrots & garlic cheese Focaccia bread.
Wines paired with the entree were 2006 Peay Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2005 Peay Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2002 Vista Verde Vineyard Pinot Noir (Magnum), 2000 Weir Vineyard (Magnum), 1999 Weir Pinot Noir and a last minute wine, a 1997 Rochiolli Riverblock Vineyard Pinot Noir.
We ended up not having dessert as planned. The host decided to bring out the Riverblock Pinot instead of the Port and his take was Pinot does not go with dessert. My take is different. Port does not go with sweet. Serve it with cheeses.
All wines were Williams Selyem from different vineyards.
A very good evening with great conversations and fantastic wines. Got home about 1 am which is very late for me

The Boys and Me at the Seafood Palace - again
Thursday, August 1, 2013
Had to wait until Henry returned from vacation to come back. There were six of us which makes for a good number to share the food dishes.
Terry came with his arm in a sling. He fell doing something "stupid" at his house (which we all do at one time or another) Along with the sling he had a beautiful black eye.
We started out with the Salt & Pepper Calamari, always good but tonight for some reason there was very little salt or pepper,
Next was Peking Duck - one of my favorites. Took some leftovers of this home.
Rounded out the meal with Beef & Chinese Broccoli, Chef's Special Shrimp (outstanding), A Spicy / Sour soup and Sea bass with vegetables.
I brought a Charles Hiedsick Blue Label Reserve Brut Champagne. I got a deal on this wine an now wished I had bought more.
Other wines were:
2008 Tyler Priesido Vineyard, Pinot Noir
2006 McKeon Phillips Caberent Franc
2005 Reserve de' ori Hamme, Chateauneauf de Pape
2008 Jonata, Tierra, Sangiovese
2005 McKeon Phillips BPR Cabernet Sauvignon

July's Wino's Gathering
Sunday, July 28, 2013
This months theme was Red wines from Spain & White wines from Latin America. William & Patte also threw in "Salsa Contest". The prize being a multiple bottle metal wine cage. That ended up being won by Sherry who made a Mango Salsa. I did not taste any myself as I really don't care for Salsas that much
8 white wines and 12 reds were brought. I brought a wine that was a blend of Riesling, Albarino and Savagnin. This particular wine would really been good at the dinner last night at Issara,
One of the wines I liked the best was a 1994 Muga Reserve Roja. I did taste most of the wines but I am sure I missed a few of the whites and I know at least one of the reds. But with 20 wines you really had to pace yourself.
So another month down and on to August and those high alcohol Zinfandels.

Margie's July Wine Activity Event
Saturday, July 27, 2013
Today we headed out to Irvine to the OC Wine Mart, a tasting room on Michelson in Irvine near the John Wayne Airport. This tasting room has a self serve enomatic wine tasting machine. You insert the prepaid card and select which wine you want to taste. It dispenses the wine and deducts the amount from you card. They did have some nice wines. Numerous Orin Swifts wines which I tasted all of them including the Prisoner and Papillon. Nice little wine bar but not geographically friendly unless you are in the area for some reason. Anne the owner was friendly and very helpful.
After tasting we headed back to Huntington Beach to Issara, a Thai restaurant which we had been to before. There were 11 of us for dinner. Margie had pre-selected the menu with the owner David.
Started out with Vegetable Egg Rolls, Chicken Satay and Tom Kha Kai soup which was really good. Then Cripsy Sole, Sizzling Seafood, Panang Beef, Prik Khing (green beans) with Tofu, Pineapple Fried Rice (1 shrimp in the entire bowl) , Pad See Yiu with Beef and white & brown rice. All the food was very good but a few of the dishes were way to "hot" for me. I drank a lot of white wine because of that. Not a wine friendly menu except for white wines. We had Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. I was so full by this time, I passed up the green beans and the dessert. I personally thought that the dishes came out too fast. I prefer a slower pace. Just do not like 4 or 5 items on my plate at a time. I have gotten so used to one dish at a time at the Chinese dinners we do, Better to compare the wine and food dish together. It might have been " family style" but that does not mean everything on the table at once. Food gets mixed together then the wine pairing goes to hell. Food was very good, service was very good. If we do a group dinner here again I hope that the dishes will be paced to come out after the prior dish was finished.
Wine selection was good. All the whites wines seemed to be drank. Reds were left over because of the :hot" food.
2010 R2 Rhapsody, Grenache-Mouverde blend
2009 Effort Chardonnay

Michaels on Naple
Wednesday, July 24, 2013
Jan & Bob invited me to dinner at Michaels on Naples tonight. Michaels received the "Top Italian Restaurant in Los Angeles County" award from Zagat. They got 28 points on the ratings. When the Zagat's (yes there is a Mr & Mrs) dined there recently they wrote on the bill "it should have been a 30".
I arrived about 6:00, dinner was scheduled for 6:30. Sat at the bar and had a "Sidecar" Its hard to find a bar that will make an authentic drink. This one was very good. Pete the bartender was personable and knew his drinks. Put in high end cognac and Cointreau.
Jan & Bob arrived about 6:20 and we were seated. This was "Dine In LA" week so we all ordered off the special menu. $45 for 3 courses. I had the Ahi Cappachio, Rabbit Roulade and Gelato and Sorbet for my chooses. Jan & Bob were happy with their halibut and steak.
They brought 2 bottles of Italian wine, bought were quite good. Since they belong to the Wine Crush's wine club they have a card that gets them no corkage for up to 2 bottles at local restaurants.

Riesling Tasting at Delius
Tuesday, July 23, 2013
Tonight Delius Restaurant hosted a Riesling tasting. 7 wines, 1 from New Zealand which I did not like. I from New York, Fox Run which I have had before and is quite good. 5 from Germany. Dave had opened a magnum of an older bottle which turned out to be my favorite.
A multitude or appetizers were passed around. More than in the past. A new one which apparently one of the cooks makes at home all the time. A crostini smeared with blue cheese and an avocado, grape, garlic mixture on top. It was to die for. Need to find out the exact mixture.

Bus Trip To Malibu Wine Country
Sunday, July 14, 2013
Today a large group of us met at Delius Restaurant for the annual bus trip to "wine country". This year the Malibu area was chosen. The small bus was full so 3 of us volunteered to ride with Dave in the Delius van that they use for catering. So after a great breakfast with Champagne we loaded ourselves into the van.
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride again. No AC in the van so we had to keep the windows down. This was not bad because it had not warmed up yet. But the van has front end problems so that became an interesting aspect to the ride. Dave did get better at the handling as the way wore on. Louise usually drives this van because she does all the catering.
Headed up 101 and got off at Kannan Road. (I'm thinking this is not the Malibu that I know). First stop was a tiny area called Cornell. I saw 3 buildings. The restaurant was loaded with bikers and the smell from the fire pits & smokers was heaven. Might be worth the trip just to eat there. Next door there was a building that used to be a storage building. This housed the wine store. Pressed tin ceiling tiles, open beams. A really beautiful, rustic place. We sat in the back on long wood tables that were varnished and stained to a real high gloss. Gorgeous chandeliers hung over the tables We had six wines. 5 from other areas that the owner sold in the store and one wine that he made himself. It was a red blend and quite good. No label on the bottle but he sold them anyway.
After walking around the store, I found that he had quite a selection of central coast wines and prices were very good. Others must have through the same as a lot of wine was bought from this establishment. I would consider stopping here on the way back from the central coast if I was early enough in the day. Or even a "road trip"
Next stop was a winery named Ciello. Outstanding view from the property but the wines sucked.
After negotiating the stop sign at the highway, it took forever to turn because of the parade of cars and motorcycles. We headed down Kannan Dume Road to PCH and made our way towards the end of Malibu where the tasting room for Rosenthal Winery was. Small building but a nice outdoor area with tables and umbrellas. We set up for lunch. They had a serving area set up for us and a staff member that took care of our party himself. As we ate lunch he came around and poured the wine for us.
Lunch this year had the same sandwiches we have had for years on this trip, Subs with either ham. turkey, beef or vegetarian. But we did have some different salads. A nice, spicy rice salad, green beans in a curry dressing, ,macaroni salad, individual quiches, homemade potato ships. Dessert was two types of brownies. We had snacks during the trip so we were not a bit deprived of food.
My disappointment was not being able to go to the Rosenthal Estate. I do know they have events and wine tastings there all the time.
I did well by not purchasing any wines. My goal this year is to drink more than I buy and reduce my cellar to a manageable size.
We got back to Signal Hill about 6:00 in the evening. Much shorter day than when we go to Santa Barbara area. A nice change. Dave is already planning next years trip, Probably to Santa Barbara proper There is an area called the "Funk Zone" which houses a lot of tasting rooms . There also are several wineries that have their barrel room facilities in that close proximity. The drive would be an hour shorter both ways if we did not go all the way into the Santa Ynez area.

The Sages of The Sta Rita Hills
Friday, June 12, 2013
Wine Country in Signal Hill held a wine tasting this evening with two of the original winemakers of the area. Ken Brown and Rick Longoria. These two have been around for a long time and both make very good wines.
This event was a sell out with a waiting list. 10 wines were poured, a mixed selection of what these two guys produce.
Two of my favorite wines tonight was the 2012 Longoria, Clover CreekVineyard, Albarino and the 2010 Ken Brown Clos Pepe Vineyard Pinot Noir.
A very enjoyable evening with friends.

Franco's Plus 3
Wednesday, July 10, 2013
CJ, Terry & I met at Franco's for a last minute dinner. It has been a couple of months since we have been here.
We made it simple, ordered the same dish. Filet Mignon but ordered finished 3 separate ways. Terry ordered rare, I had the medium rare and CJ had the well done, And they all came out of the kitchen at the same time and cooked perfectly. That is a well run kitchen.
Started out with the stuffed mushrooms and boy could you smell the garlic - they were delicious.
Only 3 wines tonight but really good ones. When you have a small group you want to bring out the better stuff.
2011 Francois Chidaine Vouvray. Excellent with the mushrooms.
2001 Stoplman La Croce - blend of sangiovese & syrah. At its peak right now. The little that was left was better the next day.
2004 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino, Cerretalto - this was the screaming winner of the evening. We polished this bottle off fast.
We closed the place down. Last ones out to the relief of the staff.

Never Get Tired of Nayada
Tuesday. July 2, 2013
Just was here at Nayada two weeks ago but back again. Food is good and the company not half bad either.
Christina does not each "seafood" of any kind. So two weeks ago along with her and no seafood and three guests that did not eat beef we had dishes that we had not ordered before. Along with "No Seafood Christina" and the doctor who is a vegetarian I expect tonight will be the same. Gives us a real good reason to break away from our favorites and be surprised with a new dish.
We started out with Vegetable Spring Rolls, Vegetable Summer Rolls and Vegetables Tempura. A dish of steamed vegetables was ordered along with a Curry dish of soft tofu, green beans and asparagus.
Maybe the Curry dish was good but I was so turned off by the color of the curry I could not bring myself to taste it. I am not a big fan of "soft" tofu and the light grey tone that the Curry took on just did not get far with me, I will usually eat just about anything but somehow that dish was "zombie like" , grey, green and cubes of white stuff.
We did have the Deep Fried Catfish with Green Apple Slaw which is always excellent along with Crying Tiger Steak.
Two non drinkers at the table so just a few wines tonight.
2011 Francois Chidaine, Touraine Val de Loire, Pinot Rose
2011 Reichsrat Von Buhl, Sauvignon Blanc ( I did like this - green apples and not very acidic)
2006 Kosta Browne, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Stan's Old Wine Cellar Cleaning
Sunday, June 30, 2013
A small group of us gathered at Stan & Karen's in Santa Monica today. Stan decided he needed to clear out some of his old wines because the aisles of his cellar are full and he cannot maneuver. Stan could do a cellar cleaning once a week for a year and it would not make a dent in his stash of wine..
We all brought a small dishes to share and Stan cooked some of his Chinese BBQ Pork, along with chicken and Morels in gravy.
I did not keep a list of the wines which I could kick myself for now but they were all in the 1993 to 1997 vintages. There was Kister, Peter Michaels, Saintsbury, Viader & Dalle Valle that I remember. Also a Banfi Brunello that was exceptional. Not a bad wine in the bunch and all were good.
Did not get home until after 10:00 pm. It has been a very long weekend for me and the alarm goes off at 5:30 am

Private Wine Tasting
Saturday, June 29, 2013
Wes Hagen, winemaker and vineyard manager of Clos Pepe Vineyards in the Sta Rita Hills did a private tasting of the 2011 releases at my "Casa" tonight. Wes was in town to judge at the Long Beach Grand Cru and did several private home tastings over 4 days. Mine being the smallest and the last one.
I served small plates pairings with each wine so to enhance the food and the wine.
Scallop Crudo with 2011 Homage to Chablis Chardonnay
Shrimp with Butter & Chives with the 2011 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay
Pulled Pork with 2011 Axis Mundi Grenache Blend
Crab Stuffed Mushrooms with 2011 Estate Pinot Noir
Lamp Chops with the 2011 Vinergon Select Pinot Noir
A table full of cheeses, mushroom terreine, pate, etc along with fresh strawberries and peanut butter cheesecake brownies rounded put the evening.
There was a 2009 Estate Pinot and BF Chardonnay opened tonight also.
Wes is a very entertaining and knowledgeable person. A former school teacher and he gives a great lesson in grape growing, terrior, wine making and taste.

June's Wino's Gathering
Sunday, June 23, 2013
The day after the dinner at 555 turns out to be the June date for the rest of us wino's. Marc & Edie's theme was "Wine That Goes With Spicy Foods". So it turned out to be a mostly white wine event. Marc made his "World Famous Jambalaya" to set the theme. Several people brought "spicy" dishes to go with the theme. I stayed away from them. Jambalaya was enough spice for me. This has been a hot week and today started out that way and then cooled down. Made a very pleasant afternoon.
Two of my favorite white wines of the day were the 2010 R2, Santa Ynez, Greanche Blanc which I brought and the 2012 Ponzi, Willamette Valley, Pinot Gris that Paul & Margie brought. Along with the Champagne those two bottles were emptied first, Of the reds I did like the 2008 Gotham Shiraz,

555 East Steak & Chop House
Saturday, June 22, 2013
Dinner in the private cellar room for nine of us tonight. Stan and Karen came down from Santa Monica to join us. Along with John Cathy, CJ, Terry and Cindy. Margie who planned the event and Paul, her husband rounded out the table. A good time was had by all. A lot of laughter tonight so we know the enjoyment that brings out.
Margie's instructions were to bring "fine" wines from our cellar and we did. I was slightly disappointed in the Cabernet that I brought. It was not showing well but the next day it was completely different. Probably needed a few more years.
I ordered the petite fillet Mignon which was cooked to perfection. Everyone seemed to enjoy their selections. It is hard to miss with aged prime Angus beef and a restaurant that knows how to cook it.I took leftovers home and it made a great steak sandwich the next day
Looking forward to our next dinner at 555 in the late fall.

In between Nayada and 555 I threw in an Italian Wine Tasting and a single malt Scotch Tasting. No notes but the scotch was excellent.

Back to our favorite Thai place. Seven of us tonight. We started out with fried calamari, crab cakes and vegetable rolls. This I felt was dinner. Then came the Tom Yong Soup. Now I know I have had dinner.
Our entrees consisted of Baby Back Ribs, Asparagus and Shrimp, Deep fried Catfish with Green Apple Slaw and CJ's special Cashew Chicken. CJ has Nayada tweak the recipe for him. He has them add green beans, asparagus and artichokes.
As usual all the food was good. We were the last ones out of the restaurant tonight. Had a really good time us usual. Of course the wines helped. It always is nice to break bread and share wine with friends.

Malbec Tasting and Raymonds Bristro
Saturday, June 8, 2013
This was Margie's Monthly Wine Activity day and we started out at Total Wine for a two hour Malbec Seminar which turned out to include several other varietals from South America. The instructor Mark was new to us and he turned out to be very good. I did learn a couple of things about tasting that I did not know. Always sniff the back of your hand to neutralize and smells before you smell you wine. And it did work. We had a total of 9 wines and all were good. Ranged in price from $12 to $25 with a 10% off for a mix of 6. I held my own and did not buy any but it was hard. I am in the drink some of my wine mode and need to get my cellar down to a reasonable number of bottles. 550 is way too much and I have a hard time keeping track even with a spread sheet.
After the seminar was over we headed a short distance to Raymonds Bristo on Warner near Gothard. www.raymondsbistro@gmail.com, , Again in a small strip mall with ample parking. Since the place was very small they took the tables and ran them down the middle of the room. Made for a very narrow table and with the 14 bottles of wine and all the glasses there really was not much room for food. But we did manage.
A variety of foods were ordered, from steak, seafood to pasta. I had the double pork chop, which was cooked perfectly. Moist and tender, Served with an apple chutney, potatoes and vegetable. The entrees also came with a choice of soup or salad. I choose the mushroom soup which was excellent. This dish was priced at $18 which I felt was very reasonable. Everyone seemed to happy with their choices as I heard no complaints. Someone ordered a tiamisu for dessert and passed it around, It was very good.
Jan brought her laptop and gave us a slide show of 80 of the 2000 pictures she and Bob took on their trip to Argentina and Chile
The wines were numerous and a wide variety. Some I did not get to taste but what I did taste were all good.

Issara Thai Restaurant
Wednesday, June 5, 2013
Margie, Paul, Terry & I did a recon at the restaurant, www.issarathaicuisine.com, to check out if it would be a good match for Margie's Monthly Wine Activity. Located in a strip mall on Warner near Goldenwest, Parking is ample. The owner David, who is an engineer and his wife , who s a doctor, decided to open a Thai restaurant because they could not find any Thai places that were good in Orange County. They had not heard of Nayada, located in Long Beach just close to the OC border. Place was new and clean and the staff was very accommodating.
We started out with the mixed appetizer plate - Vegetable egg roll, Shrimp rolls, Chicken Stay and Bangkok cups. Terry also ordered a side of Calamari. The egg rolls were very good, the shrimp rolls are like everyone else's, more dough than shrimp which I personally are not partial too, would rather just have the shrimp. The cups had a mixture of chicken and potato salad in them, the satay was very good, the calamari was OK, but not much for the price. What set all these items off was the sauces. Excellent sauces,
We then ordered several dishes. The Crying Tiger steak was OK but did not hold up to Nayada's, it was also not very hot, closer to room temperature. The Crispy Sole with green apple was excellent. moist and good flavor. The Tofu with green beans was interesting. Flavor was good but the amount of very small diced green beans was minuscule. Vegetables are cheap, they should have thrown more into the dish. The Pineapple Rice was very good.
The Roti with yellow curry was good. Not my style of dish but very good flavor.
Paul & Margie have eaten at Issara a few times and have been happy with the food. So Issara will show up on one of the monthly wine activities soon.
We brought several whites wines to go with the food and they all were a good pairing.
2012 Ponzi, Willamette Valley, Pinot Gris, 2011 Willy Gisselbrecht Gewurztraminer, 2010 Longoria Albarino and for the end of the meal a 2007 Clos Pepe Pinot Noir. The pinot did not hold up to the spicy food but was an excellent way to end the meal.

Golden Star + 4
Thursday, May 30, 2013
CJ, Terry, Hanry and I met at the Golden Star in Little Saigon for dinner. This place specializes in duck and they did not disappoint us tonight.
The wines we brought were an odd combination, but frankly went well with the dishes we ordered,
Started out with deep fried whole fish. These are very small, less than 2 inches in length, breaded and deep fried. They are so crispy and good. Habit forming.
A half roasted duck was set down, cabbage and carrots along side it. Very fresh, moist and oh so good.
Soup was served next, an odd combination of artichokes, pork ribs, carrots, dates and mushrooms. Really good flavor.
This about the time I start getting filled up.
Fresh sauteed pea shoots showed up. These are very tasty and seasonal.
I am really full now but Henry has two more dishes on his mind.
Shrimp with Maggi sauce. Salty taste to them, stir fried in the wok. Exceptionally good.
Last dish before dessert was fried noodles with shredded pork, Hong Kong style. This dish and the shrimp were new to us.
Before dessert came out, Mr Do, the owner came out with a small plate with 4 slices of what turned out to be duck mandible, the cheeks of the duck. You could tell the shape of the head and the beak. Meat was interesting but I did not think as flavorful as the roasted duck itself. Usually head meat on any animal is sweeter and more tender but this was not the case with the duck. If served again I would certainly eat them but would not go out of my way to order them.
Dessert was fresh cubed cantaloupe, served in a very large martini glass and set up with the rind to look like leaves and the cubed fruit were the flowers.
Also a bowl of green bean tapioca pudding. Their puddings are all served warm and not solidified.
Our wines tonight 2005 McKeon Phillps BPR Caberent Sauvignon, 2005 Niner Fog Catcher, 2011 Francois Chidaine Touraine, Loire, Rose of Pinot and a 2011 Arnot-Roberts, Peter Michael Vineyard, Santa Cruz, Pinot Noir.
Hyatt Huntington and Medlock Ames Wines

This was the 4th wine dinner I have attended at the Hyatt. The first were mediocre , the 3rd improved at lot and this 4th one was very good. Small crowd in attendance tonight. We had a table of 8 and there were only 6 other people plus the wine rep and the winemaker. Total of 16. Small turnout probably because no one was familiar with the wines. The winery is based in Sonoma and was new one for me. An organic and holistic winery. The wines are all very good but a little pricey.
We started out the a glass of the Sauvignon Blanc and passed appetizers out on the lawn area of the hotel facing the beach.
Our first course also included another glass of the 2012 Sauvignon Blanc served with Sustainable California Crudo - sliced scallop with red grapefruit slice, micro thinly sliced French Breakfast Radish. Sitting in a sauce of green. Cannot remember what they said it was but it was not to my liking. Others at the table disagreed with me.
Next came Laura Chanel Cabecou Cheese with a tomato, nut tapendae and crostini. Goat cheese aged in olive oil and herbs. Excellent. The chef gave me 2 small containers of the cheese to take home. A 2011 Chardonnay was poured. Too oaky for me but it did pair well with the fattiness of the cheese otherwise I would have been able to drink it.
Third course was a Braised Lamb Ravioli, Cilantro Pistou, English Peas , Pea Puree and Cotija Cheese. Again a very good dish. Loads of flavor. Paired with a 2009 Oldest Vines, Jefferson Clone,. Merlot. Best wine of the night. Well balanced and loads of complexity.
Main course was Roasted Brandt Rib Eye (the very center cut of the ribeye), Ramp Bernaise and Crispy Cippolinis. Steak was cooked perfectly and had good flavor. They poured a 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon with this dish. Nice wine but the Merlot was better.
Dessert was a plate with Dried Blueberries, Roasted Marcona Almonds, Dark Chocolate Truffles and Point Reyes Toma Cheese. The wine was a 2009 red blend
This was a very good dinner and wine pairing. Another dinner is being planned for August. Hope they keep up with the good food,
