2023 Christmas Soriee in January 2024

 Saturday, January 6, 2024

I usually have my annual Christmas Soiree the first part of December before the festivities begun. This year due to Covid and other creepy bugs coming around it was postponed for a month. This get together is always limited to 12 people. I combine different groups of people I know so they really don't see each other except for my soiree once a year. Because of the change in dates two couples could not make it so I invited others to join. Changed the dynamics and conversation quite a bit.  House was still decorated for Christmas so it was still very festive.

Interesting assortment of finger foods were offered. Pizza, shrimp cocktail (sauce was very good), samosas, couple of cheese plates, smoked salmon, sausage and peppers, Honey baked ham and turkey sliders.   Cookies, fudge, truffle candy and cheesecake rounded out the food table.

I did not write a list down for the wine. Relied on the pictures I took so there are a couple missing from the list. The two standouts were the 2013 Rochioli and the 2013 Clos Pepe VS.  Barely a few swallows left in each bottle.

Annual Christmas Soirée

 Saturday, December 2022

My annual Christmas get together tonight. Was not sure when I made plans the first of the year if it would pan out after my accident. Did not get my Christmas tree nor the house decorated this year but party went off as scheduled.  It did lift my spirits a lot to have the group in. 12 of us tonight. Same group every year. Very compatible. Some people I had not seen since 2021's party. It has been a slow recovery and not much socialization. It was so good to see them again. Only one missing and he was babysitting his grandson.

I put out shrimp, smoked salmon, mini meatballs, cheese, dip and other small nibblies. A charcuterie board was brought by Tim & Maria and CJ made Samosas. Greg brought seared Ahi.  Big hit of the evening was the two pizzas Stan and Karen brought from Domino's. So simple but so good, Handmade dipped chocolates from Bob, Panettone from Kelly & Dimitry along with chocolates and chocolate covered strawberries which were to die for and cookies from Marc & Judy. A feast board.

A lot of wine for us to choose from bubblies to port. The two Terravox wines from Missouri I put out was to be able to open and taste. They were drinkable but not stellar. But I needed the 16 different grape varietals that were in them. I now have 582 grape varietals tasted. (we all have our quirks) A Lemoncello was brought but not opened. In the freezer waiting for the next martini night.

Chez Lomita Wine Expo ll 2019

Saturday, August 24, 2019

Big  party at private residence. A lot of bodies mingling around. Everything was basically set up in the pool area. Beautiful looks but not much passing room.

A wide array of food. I concentrated on the Ahi sliders as they were closet to the end of tables lined up.  These food tables were set up on one long side of the pool. I did not venture down that path as it was less than 2 feet wide. Too close to water for me as I do not know how to swim and when walking I have this tendency to veer off the straight and narrow. I have no idea what was on the food dishes so no comments on that.

The wine table was set in a corner near the back door. Big congestion area.  I did not leave that area much at all. To walk to the other side of the pool area there was a huge rug and I looked at that as an obstacle for me. People were tripping over the edges all evening.

A lot of good  wine came through that door. Some I got to taste and others disappeared before I got to them. I monitored my intake as I was not eating much and did not want the wine getting to me. I do remember a 1990 Caymus Cab that was excellent.  I did leave earlier than most so  missed out of some special wines that were brought out by the host from his cellar.

Weather was perfect for an outdoor event. Lot a small tables and chairs lined up. Pool was beautiful with its blue lining. Very festive decorations for a fun and very sober evening.

Hill Family Wine Tasting at Table 301 Bistro

Tuesday, January 29, 2019

I missed the first wine tasting event that Table 301 did last month so I was anxious to attend this one. www.Table301bistro.com.  This is Dave & Louise's new restaurant that they opened after closing Delius. Located in downtown Long Beach which is now one of my preferred areas is one of the reasons I have not supported them much since the opening. I did drive around the area because I had time to kill. Nothing much has changed. It still looks scuzzy no matter how much money the city dumps into it. Constant road construction. It seems to never end. They do one thing then decide months later they don't like it and change things again.

Had trouble leaving the parking garage. It took my ticket but would not take my credit card to pay. Tried to use 5 different cards and none worked. So I backed up and let the person behind me go ahead. Wouldn't take his card either. Security had to be called. A man walked by and I told him what was happening and all he said "well this is Long Beach". Sad situation.

Table 301 Bisto is located at  the end of the Pomenade at 3rd St. Two large outdoor seating areas. One has a huge fire pit and a stage where they have live music.  Way too noisy for me. This is a younger persons venue. Metal chairs which I dislike, hard surfaces which does not help the acoustics.

The wine tasting was held outside on the front patio area. Two large overhead heaters kept the place decent but I could still feel the breeze. Had to keep my jacket on all evening. Food was served family style and the seating was family style also. 9 people at our combine tables. Food was brought out and shared.  That is too many people at one table to pass a pizza around too. I found it chaotic. We had 3 courses for 3 wines. First round was rose's & whites. All the food was brought out when we were on the first wine. This was a timing issue. We were expected to drink up before they poured the second wine. That does not work for me. I and several others did end up with 3 glasses so that helped but that is the way is should have been set up to begin with.  The pours were good size.

The food was good. Much better with this new chef. But nowhere the caliber of Delius in its heyday.

Hill Family Estate has 1,000 acres planted but sell of about 98% of their grapes to well known labels. Keep a very small amount to put their own label on. Wes Kohler is the rep. Haven't seen him since the Stolpman dinner at Taste last year.

We started out with three wines. Hill Family Rose, Albarino and Carly's Cuvee Chardonnay. The chard was a bit oaky and I dumped it. The Rose was OK but not stellar but the Albarino was wonderful. I thought it ended up being the best wine of the night.

The three dishes that were served with this trio of wines were Pacific Gold Oysters, Shrimp Risotto and Mushroom Pizza.  The oysters were good and decent size. 2 per person but I did end up with 2 extra because of people not liking raw oysters.  But they had small slices of lime in a small bowl to squeeze on them. 5 pieces for 9 people.  That does not make sense. A slice per person.

The Risotto was very good, the shrimp were fresh and succulent. But not enough in the bowl for 9 people, The size should have been for 4. I ended up with about a third of a cup of rice and one shrimp.

The Mushroom Pizza and about 10 to 12 inches in diameter. The slices were cut very thin. About an inch at the outer edge. No way should this be for 9 people. Pizza was good but  that did not make up for not enough.

The next trio of wines poured were Hill Family, Barrel Blend which consisted of 8 red varietals, Beau Terre Vineyard Merlot and Clarke Vineyard Syrah. All good wines but nothing knocked my socks off.
The trio of food was Lamb Cavatelli, Pizza Diavola and Shortribs.

The Lamb Cavatelli was excellent. Good flavor. Again small serving.  The Pizza Diavola was made with spring garlic, calabrese salami, stracciatella and green onions.  Very good flavors but again very small serving.  The Short Ribs had a sweet chili glaze and Asian Pear Slaw.  This was the best dish of the night. The glaze was perfect on the meat. I did end up with a whole short rib because the others were not into it.

This family style serving of food only works if there is enough food for everyone to get a decent  portion. When a few take a lot the rest get less.  We had originally had a table for four but pushed it together with the next table of five because the food came out for the nine of us. It would have been so much better to have the family style dishes proportioned for each table.  This was a Tuesday night. The kitchen wasn't that busy so it would have taken a little bit more effort to do it correctly but not that much more effort. They know ahead of time how many people at each table. It is all about portioning.

Table 301 is doing another tasting next month. I have reservations that night for the Playground so I will not be attending. But my dining companions tonight plan on going. Hopefully this kink with the food dishes will be worked out. I was told at last months wine tasting they had so much food that the restaurant actually took a loss. So the restaurant  upped the price but cut  back on portions. That apparently did not work out either. Maybe the third attempt will be the saving grace.

Table 301 Bistro Open House

Monday, December 3, 2018

Table 301 Bistro in downtown Long Beach  had their open house today. www.table301bistro.com. This is a new venture for Dave and Louise who owned Delius restaurant for 23 years .  Sits right at the edge of the Promenade. Very eclectic and geared to the newer generation of foodies.  Bar has windows that open so those outside on the patio area can order  and be served drinks.  A large open outside area with a large firepit and overhead heating sits at the back. This is where they will have live music.

Open house was limited to 200 people and it was filled. They served a small cocktail and passed appetizers all evening. Toward the end they started serving desserts,

Food was good after a real shaky start when they first opened. Problems with the chefs and quality. They seemed to have worked the bugs out and it should be a successful run for them. Everything we were served tonight was good.  Especially liked their mushroom pizza. They have a wood burning pizza over in the kitchen which you can see through the windows.

Will be going back soon for either brunch or perhaps an early dinner. At my age I am not into noise that the newer generations seems to take in stride.

Table 301 Bistro is a good addition to the downtown area.  I just wish Long Beach would do more to upgrade the whole downtown. City fathers seem to be lacking in some foresight. All they seem to be interested in is raking in the parking revenue.

So congrats to Dave and Louise and hope your run with Table 301 is as successful as the 23 years of Delius.

Wine & Fire Weekend

Saturday, August 19 to Monday, August 21, 2017

Left early Saturday morning to make the trek north to the Sta. Rita Hills for the annual Wine & Fire fest.  I have been doing this for over 15 years. We made the trip in 2 hours, traffic was light and good driving all the way.  Headed down Santa Rosa Road looking for the entrance to this years seminar and lunch at El Jabli vineyards.  After going many miles down the road and the numbers are getting higher we decided we must have missed the signage. Turning around on a narrow two lane curvy road is interesting.  As we headed back looking at the road numbers we came to the entrance for Alma Rosa.  No signage, no balloons, nothing to indicate this was the stop.  Asked a field worker where El Jabli vineyards were and he pointed to where he was standing. After pointing up the hill we took off and after cresting the small hill we saw the white tent and the big BBQ rig from Hitching Post.

Had a great seminar on the wineries and vineyards on the Santa Rosa Road area of the Sta. Rita Hills. Last years seminar was on the Route 246 producers.  Lunch was good as always. Lots of wine flowing and good talks by the participants. This all was headed by Matt Kellerman  from Wine Enthusist magazine.

At 5:00 we at the entrance to the big grand tasting at the La Purisma Mission. Beautiful grounds.  They cut back on the amount of tickets available this year and it was a much better venue. Not nearly as crowded and no long lines at the tasting tables. Hope they do this again next year.

Sunday morning after having breakfast at the hotel we were at the door of the Taste of Sta. Rita Hills tasting room  when they opened. Left with 6 bottles of a very good Proseco that Antonio Moretti makes. Next was Fiddlehead for a quick tasting before heading down the road. In Buellton we stopped at Buscador.  A new place for me . I was impressed with his wines and bought a couple of bottles. I will make it a point to stop in here next time I am in town.

Leaving Buellton we drove into Los Olivos. Tercero's tasting room was packed so we went around the corner to Dragonette.  Brandon Gilles was pouring at the seminar. A Pinot from Radiance vineyard which was exceptionally good. Then popped into Stolpman for a quick taste and walked out with 6 bottles of their Rose.

Back to Solvang for dinner at First & Oak. A restaurant in the Mirabelle hotel.  Owned by the same person that has the Sky Room in Long beach. I can never remember the name of the winery he owns. Starts with a "C" like Cloqcouiet or something along that order.  But do not like the wines at all. The food at dinner was very good but the wines by the glass were all his winery. I would dine there again but would order a bottle of something else and share it at dinner.

Up bright and early to head home. After a brief stop at watch the eclipse we veered off the freeway to visit the Hubers and their new home in Newbury Park.  Had a nice vist with Norman and Traudl then off again. Cindy needed to get home by 2:00 to do a webinar for work.  About 1:30 I reached for my purse and it was not  in the car. I had left it at the Hubers.  So we pulled over and found a shady spot so Cindy could d the webinar on her cell phone. At 2:45 we turned around and headed back to Newbury Park.. Traudl made us a dinner to go. A nice sandwhich, fresh blueberries and a homemade brownie.. Norm threw in a couple bottles of wine and Perrier water.

Got back to Cerritos at 6:30.  9-1/2 hours after we left Lompoc. Long day. Went up with the intention of not buying any wines but came home with 17 bottles.  I have no will power. But a good trip overall and looking forward to next years festival.

Road Trip with Margie

Friday, May 19, 2017

For the month of May, Margie arranged for her "wine activity" a road trip to the San Diego area to visit numerous wineries. It consisted of Escondido, Ramona Valley and for those who stayed on Sunday the Warner Springs and Northern Wine Trail,

I left work at 1:00 pm for an approximate 3 hour trip.  5-1/2 hours later I arrived in Rancho Bernardo.  Seems there was a major accident at Oso Parkway on the 405 freeway in the morning and it shut down the entire south bound side.  Big rigs, haz mat, the whole works.   Needless to say I was exhausted when I arrived and checked in to hotel.  I had about 40 minutes before showing up for dinner.

Out first dinner was at Pegasus Café. Family run Greek restaurant.  I ordered the lamb shank which seemed to be popular with others at the table. It was very good, lots of flavor and very tender. Vegetables and sauces was excellent. Ate the meat but just could not finish the plate. Hated to see it be taken away but with leftovers not being in the game plan not much else I could do.  I did not bring any bottles of wine with me for this trip. I could always order by the glass which I did. Had a glass of a Greek red wine which paired well with the lamb.   I did have a pour of a Lancaster Cab that was brought along with an Albarino.   But being so exhausted from the ride down I really did not have the energy to get into drinking that evening.

There were a few wines brought by others. 2011 Puma Road Chardonnay, 2015 Turonia Albarino, 2015 Tablas Creek, Patelin de Tablas Rose and a 2009 Lancaster Cabernet Sauvignon.

Saturday morning we boarded  a mini bus to take us to 3 wineries. First stop was Hungry Hawk Vineyards in Escondido. Small family run, less that 1,200 cases.  I thought thy were the best wines of all we ended up tasting today. We did a barrel tasting of a blueberry wine that they are making into a sparking. You would not think that this was a fruit wine. I would be interested in tasting it once it is bottled. They offered a vineyard tour which a few people did partake in.  I just wanted to be inside. 90 degrees today and heat is my enemy.

Then off to Cordiano Winery for lunch. Somehow this establishment really messed up the reservation. Nothing was taken care of ahead of time. No one seemed to know what was going on. Finally the manager showed up and admitted it was his fault. He comped  those who had ordered salads and gave us free desserts.  They do not have a tasting room here. Seems it is set up as a destination for pizza etc.  But the view is beautiful. The wines were not.

Last stop was Turtle Rockridge winery in Ramona.  The wines were just OK, the view outstanding, the owner delightful and the entertainment was good. Lots of young people showing up for a "destination event".  It was the most enjoyable. It also was staring to cool just a bit and they did have adequate shade.

Dinner tonight was at Le Bistro de Louisa.  I was absolutely wined out so I ordered a cocktail which really tasted good.  There were two wines brought,( $20 corkage), a 2013 Cake Bread Pinot which I did not taste and a 2009 Chateau Lynch-Bages, Pulliac (Bordeaux). I did taste this wine. Big Cabernet and needed a big piece of red meat for it.  I ordered a bowl of onion soup and a Foie Gras Ravioli for dinner.  Both very good.

On Sunday morning I left to return home.  Made it in 90 minutes. So much nicer than Fridays trip.  This adventure was good  but I think the heat really did a number on all of us. It was nice to try the wines of the area.  I wasn't expecting anything stellar but they were drinkable. On the same line of Temecula style wines.  They also bring in fruit from other areas so it is not all estate grown.  Interesting to try  but this area would not be a destination for me for regular  wine tasting.

Road Trip

Friday, November 4, 2016 to Wednesday, November 9, 2016

Back up to Avila Beach for the SLO Fall Festival. Took one hour to drive less than 25 miles on the freeway when I got on the road. Had three accidents slowing traffic on the way up. Not the best start to a getaway. Also could only get three days at my time share. Seems someone who owns 50 timeshares at the resort had them all booked that week.

Stopped at Huber Winery to say hello to Traudl and Norman. Had to pickup some paperwork that Traudl translated for me. She can read and write in the old German script which I was very appreciative of.

Saturday morning off to the festival. It is held on the golf course right next to the resort. Very convenient.  Saw a few people from down south and had a good time tasting and eating. But my age is starting to show.  Maybe this will be my last trip up to Avila.

That evening went off to Kanpai Sushi in Shell Beach for dinner. Had the Nigiri Omakase plate and a Morimoto Imperial beer.

Sunday I forced myself not to go to all the open houses in SLO. It was all free but I knew I would buy wine and add several cases . I just have to back off buying.  I find out that Ember  opened at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon . It is a restaurant that I have been wanting to try for since it opened. Timing just did not work out before.  I stopped at the Taste of the Valley wine bar in Pismo Beach and did a tasting. Did buy two bottles of Baker and Brain (yes brain) Gruner Veltliner. A very good wine.

Arrived at Ember in Arroyo Grande about 4:20. The place was half filled by then. By the time I got my food the place was packed. Food was excellent. Service was excellent.  They served a basket of bread. House made Rosemary Foccacia and a house made Country bread with a sourdough taste to it.
Ordered an appetizer of Pork Belly, Abalone and Cilantro Cream Sauce.  To die for. So good. Then onto a plate of  Polpette,  lamb meatballs with a spicy cheese sauce. I filled up on bread so I ate one meatball and had them pack the remainder for the next day. Enjoyed a glass of Au Bon Climant Pinot Noir.

Left Monday morning to check in at the Hotel in Solvang. Decided to spend two nights before heading home.  I swung by the Wine Ghetto in Lompoc before checking in. I had heard about a glass blower opening a shop there.  Ended up my a few Christmas presents.  Stopped at Industrial Eats in Buellton for dinner. Ended up with a Wild Mushroom Pizza which was dynamite. Loaded with mushrooms and spinach.

Tuesday morning after breakfast at the hotel I wandered down the block to the Jules Hus. A Christmas  ornament store than remains open all year. Picked up a few item but for some reason not much appealed to me. Then off to Los Olivos . Unfortunately J. Wilkes was closed as was Tercero. Stopped in at Stolpman and did buy eight bottles of wine. The cheapest I have gotten out of there. Usually pick up three cases or more. I am trying to cut back.  On the way back I drove into Santa Ynez and had a late lunch at Trattoria Grappolo. Ordered the Veal Scaloppine which was very good and had a glass of their house chardonnay. No oak so it was on my side of liking. Took an order of Tiramisu back with me to eat later this evening.

Wednesday morning was on the road at 9:00. Wanted to miss the Santa Barbara work traffic and get into Los Angeles before it started there. Traffic was good until I hit the valley at 10:30  and then it was a crawl until past the airport.  Mileage was good for this trip. Put on 571 miles and got an average of 38 mpg. Used 15 gallons of gas. Not bad.

This may be my last trip unless someone else drives. It is starting to get to me, Just cannot push like I used to.

Wine & Cheese at Total Wine

Thursday, September 22, 2016

9 of us attended a wine & cheese pairing at Total Wine in Huntington Beach . Don't have too many comments. Wines were decent, cheese also. But the person leading the seminar had no clue of what he was doing. Cheese's were cut in large chunks with no knives to make them smaller. So it was eitherr bite them or try to break a piece. Not the best way to handle it. I really wish they would bring back the person that was doing the seminars before It's really bad when I know more about the cheese, wine and regions that the clueless dude.

Pizza and Wine

Saturday, September 3, 2016

Joined about 30 other people and feasted on at least 9 to 11 different pizzas.  I tasted 4 of them and went with the exotic combinations,. Like, shrimp, artichoke, etc.  Great flavors.  My only disappointment was by time the pizzas arrived  (not by a pizza delivery company) they were not hot anymore.  Since they weren't in a  "hot box"  they cooled considerably. It is my personal taste but room temperature pizza does not do it for me.  The crust always gets dry and tough for me. But it did not seem to bother most everyone else. Most of the pizza was gone quickly.

A lot of wine tonight, some much older which was a treat to taste them. A few were over the hill but it was an experience to try.  I brought a 2010 Loring, Garys Vineyard, Pinot Noir. It was drinking really well. I am a fan of Gary's Vineyard, no matter who makes it.

Was talking with a man at the gathering and he happened to mention a person by name. I asked if this person's father had been a judge and he said yes. I informed him that I used to babysit the children on the man  who became a judge when he was going to law school and working a  night job to put himself through school.  Small world.  That was way before student loans and Pel grants. That is why those generations had no school debt. Maybe it took them longer to get their degree but they were debt free.

This man I was talking with also is a winemaker with a very small production. We will be having a private tasting soon to see what he has to offer.

Wine & Fire

August 6 & 7, 2016.

This trip may be my last to this event. It is starting to get harder for me top walk around on all the rough surfaces. Might have to look at getting a cane to help. At least I did not have to drive again this year. We left Cerritos about 7 am Saturday morning and surprisingly got to Buellton about 9 AM. Two hours is really good time. We decided since we would be having a very large BBQ lunch at noon that we would skip the big breakfast at Ellens this year The seminar did not start until 10 AM but our thinking was arrive early so we don't have to walk so far. So much for "thinking". When we arrived at Hillard Bruce about 9:20 there were numerous cars ahead of us.

Seminar was good, had a great panel of winemakers from the area . Tasted 12 wines then broke for lunch. BBQ lunch was catered by the Hitching Post and was very good. View from the facility were perfect.

After checking in to the hotel we proceeded to go to the Mission for the Grand Tasting. The majority of the wineries in the Sta,. Rita Hills were represented . This is their big fest for the year. Saw about 2 dozen people that I knew at this years tasting. All from So. Ca.  This is the must go to for Sta. Rita Pinot fans. Wines were good, food was good and a very enjoyable evening among the trees at the Mission. Got to talk with a lot of winemakers I knew. Perfect evening.

Sunday morning we decided to hit the Los Alamos area. I had not been in years and Cindy never had been there,. Small town about 6 blocks long. There were 4 wine tasting rooms  and we hit them all. I will say nice wines, but not great wines. Frankly I was disappointed in all of them. Guess I was expecting more. I also found the prices high for what they were.  Had a sandwich at Well Bread. They open at 7AM and bake all their own bread . Good sandwich and people kept coming in and out all they time we were there. Busy spot.
Found out that Full, of Life Flatbread did not open until 5:00 so we left.

Ended up in Lompoc at Scratch Kitchen for dinner. Had the crabcakes for dinner and was very disappointed.  They were not cooked through. Took them back with me and recooked them when I got home. Tasted much better. Normally I would complain but I just wasn't up to it.  The Loaded Potato Soup was very good but rich. Glad I just ordered a cup. Tired and worn out. Things catch up with me faster these days.

Hit happy hour at the hotels bar. We got 4 free drinks every day we were there along with cook to order breakfast.

Up early Monday to return to So Cal.  It was a good trip but do not think I can handle this on my own anymore. If someone doesn't drive I will not be making this adventure again. I have done this fest for about 15 years. and it has always been the highlight of the summer.

Private Party at Delius

Saturday, January 16, 2016

The dynamic trio rented out Delius restaurant for the evening. Quite a feat on a Saturday night. This was in celebration of their "commitment" to each other. Otherwise a wedding reception with no wedding per say. Approx  100 people. Open bar. Choice of 3 different cocktails, The Hugh, The Mark and The Kurt. 2 wine bars set up and beer available also.

Large table set up in the prixe fixe room and loaded with cheeses etc., and two very large cakes. One pineapple and the other chocolate. Both were exceptionally good. And the waiters passing around at least a dozen different kinds of appetizers.

Hugh did the saber opening of the champagne. Dave made him do it in the parking area just in case. But it went off without a hitch.

This was a very memorable and fun evening. Good food, drinks and great people.

Holiday Brunch

Sunday, December 27, 2015

Brunch at my house today.  Sliced thumb open on the cheese grater. Kitchen sink backed up. Not the best of days for me. This is January 11 and I am just getting around to posting. Did a major job on the thumb.

Had about 25 people in for my annual holiday brunch. This will probably be my last one for a large group. I will leave myself an opening for a small group. Everyone usually brings  a small dish and  a bottle of wine etc., it still runs me at least $250 plus my time. The thing that really gauls me is people seem more than willing to show up but never reciprocate in return. After numerous  years of this I think it's time to shut it down. Just invite those that open their doors to me.

I put out 6 bottles of Louis Bouillot, Cremant de Bourgone.  Made 3 egg casserole dishes and had two types of sausages and a spiral sliced ham. There were some interesting side dishes but the desserts were lack luster.

My thumb pounded the entire day. Hard to keep a happy face when you are in pain.

The list of wines brought follows - spelling may be off because I cannot hold a pen properly.

2009 Graham Beck , Breui Zero, Premier Cuvee - excellent
201 BV Rutherford, Napa, Cabernet Sauvignon - always a good choice
NV  Ctsan Don Reserve, Club Cuvee - do not remember
NV Schramsberg, Blanc de Blanc - gone by time I heard it was on the table
2013 Hartley Ostini, Hitching Post, Cork Dancer, Pinot Noir - good
2007 LeVieille Ferme Cotas du Ventaux, Rouge - good
2012 Truett Hurst, 3 Vineyards, Zinfandel - did not taste
2014 Rockview Reserve, Mendocino, Chardonnay - did not taste
2012 Gavarint, Elin Grasso, Langhe, Nebbiolo - good
2014 Silverado Vineyards, Miller Ranch, Napa, Sauvignon Blanc - did not taste
2010 Halter Ranch Syrah - did not taste
23012 Sin Zin, Alexander Valley, Zinfandel - OK
2009 Tobin James, Reserve, Merlot - did not taste

SLO Wine Country Harvest on the Coast

November 6, 2015

On the road about 9:30 am today. Have a long drive to Avila Beach with a few stops. Decent traffic but still hit enough to be irritating. No way to get through downtown LA and the valley without slowing down somewhere.

Arrived in Buellton just after 1:00 and stopped in at Terravant for lunch.  The elevator is broken so I had to hike up the stairs.  My hip is in bad shape right now and it was not pleasant. Had  the best BLT's ever. Chibatta bread with lettuce, tomato and applewood smoked bacon. Selected a half glass of Ken Brown Sta. Rita Hills Pinot and a half glass of Dragonette 7 Syrah. Both good choices.

Then down the road to Huber Cellars. Needed to pick up wine an visit with Norman and Traudl for an hour. They were telling me they got 2,000 lbs of grapes an acre  this year and Clos Pepe on the other side of Hwy 246 from them only got 500 pounds per acre. Not a good start for Kathryn Hall who just took a 15 year lease on the Clos Pepe vineyards.

After an hour took off to get into Avila Beach at a decent time. Needed to stop at Trader Joes to get few things for breakfast every day while I am up here. Pulled into he San Luis Bay Resort about 5:30. A long day. Hip is in bad shape. Could barely walk. Unloaded the car onto a cart and checked in. Naturally since I am having problems walking this year my room is on the 4th floor and the very end of the building. At least it is quiet here. And so glad I did not opt for the winemaker dinner tonight.

Saturday  morning went to the golf course next to the resort for the wine festival. Had early admission so got to taste some library wines. Talked to a few new comers in the area. Too bad I am at the tail end of my wine buying days. Some really nice new wineries. Lots of good food and a lot of wine. Spent the rest of the day stretched out on the couch to get pressure off the hip.

Sunday got a late start which was OK with me. Headed to the Edna Valley to Wolff Vineyards. They make some of the best Petite Syrah around.  Tastings in SLO are free today if you have your wristband from the festival.. Then back to Avila. Stopped in at Sinor-Lavalle and tasted Mike's new white label and black label pinots. Black label is fruit and jammy. Cocktail wine. White label is only 13% alcohol and is a great food wine.  Came out of there with 9 bottles. Mike sent me down the street to a new tasting room. Clutoh. Good wines but pricey. Came away with 2 blends but at $55 each hope I like them when I get home as well as I do now.  Decided to eat out tonight and went into Shell Beach to Kanpai Sushi.   www.kanpaishellbeach.com  Had a Morimoto Imperial beer and the Nigri Omakase sushi plate which consisted of Tuna, Yellow Tail, Sea Breen, Albacore, Red Sea Bass, Shrimp, Scallops and I added Spanish Mackerel and Fresh Water Eel. I was surprised at the quality of the fish. They fly it in twice a week from Japan.. Their other menu items looked really good. Will have to come back to this place.

Monday I decided  to go  into Los Olivos to pick up wine and have lunch. Stopped at Stolpman and Tercero. By time I left Bacon and Brine was getting ready to close to no pig for me right now. Hit a lot of heavy rain on the way back to Avila. Stopped in at the Cracked Crab, www.crackedcrab.com for an early dinner. Had to have the cup of clam chowder along with  crab cakes and abalone. Had a glass of Verdad, Albarino. Tasted like 7-UP.

Tuesday, my last day. Cutting the trip short this time.  Did a little shopping, Target. Home Goods and Costco. Always like to see the local wines that the stores in the area carry. Then down to Pismo Beach and stopped in at the Taste of The Valley wine bar. Always make this stop. They carry a good variety of local wines. Tasted the 2012 Lucia Garys Pinot, 2012 Pianetta Paso Robles Sangiovese, 2013 Ricky Hill Tempranillo, 2012 Hoyt Paso Robles Cabernet, NV 08-09-10, Margerum Syrah, 2013 Opolo Mountain Zinfandel and a 2012 Clayhouse Petite Syrah. Wanted to go to Ember tonight for dinner. That is the new hot restaurant in Arroyo Grande. While  in the Taste of the Valley, the owner Lisa pointed out a man who turned out to be the the owner-chef of Ember. They are closed on Monday and Tuesdays. Out of luck tonite. So I left and walked across the street to Giuseppe's www.guisepperestaurant.com for dinner. Not to busy when I walked in by by time I left they were packed. Had a 2011 Damilano Barolo along with Osso Bucco (veal) for dinner. The plate came with Saffron Risotto and Zucchini that had  been spiraled cut like spaghetti.

Wednesday got on  the road about 8:00 am. 40 degrees. Winter is coming. Stopped in Buellton to gas up. 50 cents a gallon cheaper than Pismo. Got home about noon. Then of all  things the damm elevator in the building is down and I have to walk up the stairs.  Had to have my son carry  everything up and put the 5 cases of wine the garage. Glad it is cold now. Good trip but the hip issue has to be resolved.

Wine & Fire 2015 - On The Way Home

Monday, August 17, 2015

Had another breakfast at the hotel and loaded the car for the trip back. Can't get into Central Kitchen until 10:00 to pick up the cheese. at 10 o'clock we got into Cindy's car and it will not start. She has some king of keyless system and apparently did not turn everything off when we loaded up. But that was only 30 minutes ago. Asked her when she had a new battery installed and found out it was still the original battery. 45 minutes later triple A shows up. they run the diagnostic and sure enough her battery is on its way out. They do get us started and followed us to the gas station where we needed to fill up. We were concerned about the car not starting again. Filled up and the car turned over. Waved goodbye to the tow driver and headed to Central Kitchen. Left the car running when we went into the store, picked up the cheese and headed down the road.

Traffic on the way back in the LA area,. Got to Cindy's after 3:00. Long day. But a great time. Especially nice when someone else drives. I paid for the gas but it is so worth it to be a passenger.

Maybe I will do this again next year.

Wine & Fire 2015 - Last Day

Sunday, August 16, 2015

I was told at the Clos Pepe bash that they had some Zwimbto cheese at the Central Kitchen store. We stopped in before heading for dinner to pick it up. Unfortunately the cheese that was left from the Clos had not made it back to the store yet. This cheese was ordered special for Clos Pepe. We were told if we came back in the morning when the opened we could purchase any unopened cheese. If you are in the Lompoc area this place is a must to stop. Great deli, beautiful sandwiches and salads.

So down the street we went to Scratch Kitchen for dinner. New place in town and Lompoc sure needs some good eating establishments. They are starting to realize what they have in the Ghetto and the potential for wino's to stay in the area instead of Santa Ynez and Solvang. They did to work on it some more they are headed in the right direction.

Scratch Kitchen is on H street close to the main part of town. Simple, noisy but the food is good. They have a full bar , good wine list and if you bring in a local wine there is no corkage. I was so wined out by time dinner was upon us I ordered a beer. We ordered a couple of starters. Ahi with avocado and a beet salad. Both were excellent. I ordered the tuna filet, fresh that day, caught that morning. Sat on a piece of grilled watermelon and had a compote of cantaloupe and cucumber on top. Excellent flavors. Cindy had the grilled lamb chops and they were cooked perfectly. We were happy campers. service was good. The restaurant itself was noisy. They were busy but the acoustics are minimal.  They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I would definitely go back.

Wine & Fire 2015 and Clos Pepe's Farewell Soiree

Sunday, August 16, 2015

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, Cindy and headed down 246 toward Clos Pepe. Andrew had told me to come early because of the crowds. Gave me a chance to talk with Wes before the groupies and hangeroners hit. Very bittersweet day. 2014 is the  last label of Clos Pepe for at least 15 years. Vineyard has been leased and Wes is headed to J. Wilkes for new adventures.

We hit the library table early and and tasted some outstanding old vintages of Clos Pepe. The last that exist. Said my goodbyes to Chanda and Peregrine, her service dog.

The charcuterie  that was put out today was unbelievable. They went all out. Central Coast Specialty Kitchens in Lompoc was in charge. There was a real runny, soft cheese I had never heard of on the table. Zwimbto from Portugal. Just fell in love with this cheese. Must get some.

Had a long conversation with Cathy Pepe. Wished her well in her retirement. She and Steve plan on traveling a lot. Last big affair at the house. Have wonderful memories of all the open houses and especially the private dinners that I attended. Cathy did say Andrew was planning on doing a few events and I asked to be the first one notified. Andrew will stay on with Clos Pepe until all the wines that are in storage are gone. Then he will follow Wes to J. Wilkes.

Starting to get very crowded so we make our departure. Waved goodbye to Wes and he shouted out  "I love you".  LOL: He should with the money I spend every year at the Clos. Plan on seeing him a J.Wilkes in November when I head up to Avila.

Went across the highway and visited at Huber Cellars. Norm and Traudl are so sweet and nice. Bought a couple bottles of Hafen, a Dornfelder Port. The Hubers are slowly retiring also and selling most of their grapes off. Norm will continue to make a smaller amount of wine every year. Cindy bought several jars of Jalapeno jam that Traudl makes. All proceeds go the the animal rescue fund.

Stopped at Kessler-Hawk, Longoria and Montemar. At Monetmar ran into a couple that was familiar with FAWG, a wine group in the South Bay that I have to some of their functions.  How small the world is when you start conversations with strangers. Saw Steve Arrowood, owner of Montemar. Had not seen him for a few years. Nice conversation. Will make a point of stopping back in next time I am in the area.

Wine & Fire 2015 - Saturday Evening

Saturday, August 15, 2015

Could not get checked in immediately at the hotel so naturally just had to go to the Ghetto for some tasting. Hit Moretti and LaMontagne for about an hour then back to the hotel. Cleaned up and headed to the mission for the big event. The grounds are beautiful and the weather was perfect. Seems not as many people as last year which was fine with me.

Ran into 7 people I knew and had not seen since Orv's funeral in 2008. Every time I come here I run into people I know from the LA/OC area. We all know a great tasting.

42 wineries pouring here tonight and the BBQ guys are here also. Lots of food and lots of wine and good music.

Forgot all about the silent auction again. Which is probably best for me - saves me a lot of money.

I think I did more socializing tonight than drinking. But since I started drinking at 11:00 this morning that was probably best also. Great evening.

Wine & Fire 2015 - Saturday Morning

Saturday, August 15, 2015

Took off early to make Buellton by 9:30. First event today is at 10:30. Had some slow down before we got out of the LA area but then it was smooth sailing. Arrived in Buellton at 9:00 and headed over to Ellens for breakfast.  Our rational was eat now because we probably won't start eating at the BBQ until close to noon as there were seminars scheduled. About 10:00 we headed over to the old Sanford Barn on Santa Rosa Road for the BBQ. Scored a table with lots of umbrellas around it. Loring and Siduri wines were being poured in the bar. Adam Lee from Siduri and Brian Loring were the hosts. On the tables was a bottle of Kessler Hawk Rose. Nice big format glasses available and we got to take them home with us.

They started talking with each of the "grill masters" about their style and technique of grilling which took about 20 minutes and then the food and wine began. Cindy and I were both full from breakfast. But we seemed to find room for a few more bites. At least you could go slowly as the event did not end until 1:30.

The Argentian BBQ was my favorite. The did lamb and pig. The rub on the pigskin was to die for. Tender and juicy meat. The lamb also was very succulent. The wines on this table were from Clos Pepe, Ken Brown and Liquid Farm.

Steve Clifton from Brewer Clifton was there with his portable wood fire pizza oven. Huge contraption. But he was pouring Palmina, Brewer-Clifton, Fiddlehead and I think a couple of others.

Hitching Post was grilling beef and Frank Ostini was there. Known for their restaurant and BBQ.  They were pouring some of their older vintages and Rick Longoria was there also. Rick was pouring an older vintage of the original Sanford and Benedict Pinot Noir.

Tollhouse BBQ had their big smoker with them. Interesting to try the different methods of BBQ. Ribs at this table. Wines  were Zotovich and Transcendence.

K-H BBQ was grilling bacon wrapped shrimp. Big shrimp and succulent. Kessler-Hawk and  LaMontagne wines were at this table.

Lastly we had Peter Cargasacchi making his world renowned beef sliders. Huge sandwiches, loads of beef and coleslaw. Everyone was raving about them. Should not have had that big breakfast at Ellens. Cargasacchi, Loring and Siduri wines were being poured.

Good event, lots of great food, great wines. Venue was good. Beautiful day overlooking the original Sanford and Benedict vineyard. Nice people at our table. Talked with a lawyer that represents the Food Network. Found out only 5 of the "chefs" that have shows are really well paid. The others are not even close to these people's salaries. I could figure out 4 of them, still trying to figure out the last one. It will pop into my head someday when I least expect it. A sunny 95 degrees here. So glad for the shade.

My only negative was I felt the "seminars" should have been longer and more concise. I would have likes to find out more on the techniques. And a lot of others felt this way also.

Italy- Food and Wine

Saturday, June 6, 2015

Started out with an Italian wine seminar at Total Wine. Interesting and informative. Then off to Buon Gusto for dinner. www.buongustohb.com,   18 people so it was a long table. Sat outside and the weather did cooperate. Buon Gusto has an extensive menu almost too extensive.  I pick out a combination of penne pasta with pink cream  sauce, artichokes, asparagus, mushrooms and added shrimp and scallops. Along with a house salad which is a meal by itself. Ate the salad and about 1 cup of the pasta. Leftovers for the next day. Buon Gusto's portions are huge. Everyone takes home a "doggy container". The restaurant keeps various sizes of containers at each station because it is a given that you will take food home.

There were 20 wines on the table. None of them really stood out as great. A few good ones but most were average or below. I was disappointed in both wines I brought. Especially the Italian red. But it was on par with several I tasted. Someone kept shoving their red wine my way. They thought is was fantastic and my thought was who would drink this crap. Then I remembered who brought it.

Felt sorry for the waitress. Had to handle this large group herself. The restaurant was packed along with our large table and so some dishes were slow to get out especially if they were not a pasta dish. There was no automatic gratuity on the bill which would be normal for a large group. We all got our own individual checks so I just added another $20 to the normal tip. She worked her buns off and did not loose her cool. I would have told couple of people in the group to go ____ themselves.

A  nice day, good wines and good food and mostly pleasant people.
